What they fail on
Most dealership websites fail on more than one measure. On phones, the most common failure is not loading speed. It's the page jumping around while it loads.
| Measure | What it means | Websites failing |
|---|---|---|
| Cumulative Layout Shift | The page moves while it loads | 109 of 137 |
| Interaction to Next Paint | Slow to respond to a tap | 76 of 137 |
| Largest Contentful Paint | Main content slow to show | 44 of 137 |
The typical dealership website on a phone
Half the measured websites score better than these numbers and half score worse. Loading is not the main problem: the typical site shows its main content in time. It fails on the page moving while it loads and on slow responses to taps.
| Measure | Typical dealer website | Google's good limit |
|---|---|---|
| Largest Contentful Paint | 2.2 s | 2.5 s |
| Interaction to Next Paint | 213 ms | 200 ms |
| Cumulative Layout Shift | 0.18 | 0.1 |
How we measured
The data is Google's Chrome UX Report, which records real Chrome visits over a rolling 28 days. We started with 160 retail dealership websites that show live inventory; 140 had enough visits for Google to report.
A website passes when loading, responsiveness and stability are all in Google's good range, at the 75th percentile of visits, on mobile and on desktop. Collected September 18, 2026. Anyone can reproduce it: the full list is published as data.
